Obituary Examples: Ready-Made Templates and Samples

When you don't have the strength to find the words, a ready-made example helps. Below are a few obituary templates for different situations that are easy to adapt to your own.

A short obituary

Suited to social media and announcements. Example: "With deep sorrow we announce that [name], [years of life], has passed away. A bright, kind person, a loving [husband/father/friend]. The farewell will take place on [date, place]. Remembered and loved."

An obituary for a colleague

Places the emphasis on the person's profession and contribution. Example: "The team at [organization] mourns the loss of [name]. For more than [N] years they were part of our team — a true professional and someone people came to for advice. We will miss them."

An obituary from the family

More personal and warm. Example: "Our dear [name] passed away on [date]. They had a gift for making everyone feel like family, loved [hobby] and were always a support to us all. Thank you for every day with you. Your memory will stay with us forever."

How to adapt a template

Replace the general phrases with specific details: a name, the years, one vivid trait of character, a favorite pastime. It's the details that turn a template into a real tribute. Don't be afraid to shorten it — a short, sincere text is better than a long, formal one.

  • Fill in real names, dates and facts.
  • Add one detail that belonged only to this person.
  • Remove clichés and keep the sincerity.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a template without changes?
It's better to adapt it: add the name and personal details. That way the obituary becomes a tribute to this particular person rather than an impersonal text.
What length is best?
For an announcement, 2–4 sentences. For a memory page there's no limit on length: there the obituary is complemented by a biography, photos and stories.
